On November 5th millions of American women will cast a ballot in the General Election. This is possible thanks to the efforts of women like Lucy Smith Morris (1850-1935), a Berlin resident who lived at 209 Park Avenue.
Morris recognized the potential power of women’s political influence. Through her work, and the many others like her, Morris helped to pass the 19th Amendment, gaining women the right to vote in 1920.
Also discussed will be the Lucy Smith Morris historical marker, #362, found in Berlin’s Nathan Strong Park. Out of nearly 620 historical state markers, there are only seven large markers that feature women. The Lucy Smith Morris marker is one of these seven and it needs refurbishment and fundraising is currently underway.
If you want to know more about Lucy Smith Morris and the refurbishment of the historical marker, come to the presentation at the Berlin Public library on Wednesday, October 23, at 6:00 p.m.
The presentation will be given by regional historian and Ripon Historical Society Now & Then writer, Pat Grahn. The event is free and open to the public.
